I have been working with my daughter on her alphabet since she was about 6 months old. The child has refused to learn it. It even came to the point that when she was 20 months old she said, "Mommy, I don't WANT to learn my alphabet!"
Finally this afternoon I removed her LeapFrog Fridge Phonics set from the cabinet (where it had been placed after an episode of throwing the letters on the floor a few months ago) and immediately she found the correct letters when I asked her to. Of course, I only pulled out 8 random letters, since I felt like 26 might be overwhelming at this point, but still! Progress! She was very excited to receive positive reinforcement, and to hear the voice say, "R!" when she was trying to find the "R". Joy in learning is such a vital piece to education, and without it, there is no motivation. Without motivation, there is no success, and without success, there is no desire.
Hopefully in the coming weeks we will complete all of the letters, and can finally move on to letter combinations, using her LeapFrog Word Whammer. I will say, she is very quick to remind me when "her" letters are around- meaning the ones in her name.
