I Could Be Somebody Important

Anyone who knows me knows that I have high expectations for those in the comsumer-services industry.  After a particularly disappointing experience today, I was saying, "How do they know who I am?  I could be the wife of the president of the company!  I could be somebody important!"  At the suggestion of my husband, I have turned this somewhat shallow statement into a thoughtful piece of prose.

Somebody Important

I could be somebody important
I could be someone above the status quo
I might have been something much greater
I might have been a famous figure, too.

I could be somebody with genius
I could be someone essential to the task
I might have been widely recognized
I might have been notable and of note

I could be somebody influential
I could be somebody prominent
I might have been interesting and vibrant
I might have been intellectually relevant

But I am just a Mommy and a Mother,
Just the only one who values every breath
Just the manager of a little one's universe
Just the protector and defender of her heart

But I am just a friend and a daughter
Just the one who will always dry your tears
Just the helper and the listener whenever
Just the shoulder and the hand always on-call

But I am just a wife and a lover,
Just the only one who's always by your side
Just the one who makes your meals and does your laundry
Just the one who makes the better man you are.

I could be somebody important,
I could be someone on the magazine,
But maybe I already have my Value
Being as Virtuous a Woman as I can.
