Edisto

Seven years ago my husband took me to Edisto for our honeymoon.  If you've never been, you might not understand how nervous I was the first time we went.  The island is about an hour south of Charleston,South Carolina, and is in an economically depressed part of the state.  There are decrepit mobile homes, run-down houses from the 1800s, mattresses hanging like swings in the live oaks (no kidding!) and plenty of questionable "farmers" selling their "crops" from the back of their pick-up trucks.
On the way there, I was thinking, "Where in the world is he taking me?" as it wasn't exactly the drive I was expecting to experience on my honeymoon.   Once we arrived on the island, however, things became much more clear.  It was gorgeous, and still is.  They have kept the island under-developed, so it has remained small and not very "touristy".  You see the same people working in the restaurants every year, you always shop at the same grocery store (there's only one, a Piggly Wiggly), and you might even see the same staff at the resort.
It is a beautiful place, graced with live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, tree-enclosed sandy lanes, beautiful shell-filled beaches, and salt marshes brimming with life.
We see dolphins every time we go, as well as egrets, pelicans, and turtles.  We have yet to see the elusive alligators, but the signs warn they are there!
It has been a joy to take our daughter with us to our favorite place, and this past weekend was no different.  Although it was late in the season, the days were sunny and warm, and we enjoyed venturing around the island, and spending hours on the sandy beach.  Our daughter loved the cold waves, and kept saying, "Isn't it a wonderful day to be at the ocean, Mommy?"  She loved gathering shells, and calling the whales and dolphins (despite the fact that they couldn't hear her over the surf. :-)

As always, we had a lovely time, relaxing, playing, and enjoying Edisto.  It's so nice to have such a paradise that we can drive to in a few short hours.  It makes spontaneous vacations possible!
